Water.
Yep. That's it. Pretty simple.
I'm not sure why it took me nearly 30 years to figure this out but I'm glad I did. It started when I did an "It Works" body wrap (curiosity got the best of me there) and I figured that if I spent $25 on this, I better do what it takes to make it work and that included drinking a lot of water for the next 72 hours. (If you're curious, I lost about a 1/2 in my thighs.) I've kept up with my water drinking even after the 72 hours and have noticed a difference in my hair, skin and activity level to name a few things.
There are a couple of recommendations out there about how much water to drink. Some say 8 glasses a day, other say drink about half of your body weight in ounces. I've opted for the goal of drinking half my body weight in ounces so I'm drinking at least two, measurable, 32oz Nalgene bottles of water a day. That's a lot of water and, truth be told, I definitely go to the bathroom more but that's the only downfall I've noticed!
You can read the benefits of drinking water anywhere, and there are a ton of them, but here are the benefits I've experienced:
My skin and hair is not as dry. These midwest winters are tough on my skin and hair, I am usually completely dried out and lathering on the lotion but since I've made an effort to drink more water my skin and hair feels SO MUCH BETTER.
My energy level is increased. This is a true statement. I don't feel as groggy in the middle of the afternoon on a work day and I have a lot more energy during workouts.
I feel full. I am an all-day muncher and snacker. I always have been and always will be but water has helped me feel full and killed a lot of my typical cravings. I had a few people mention that it looks like I've lost weight and that may be true (I rarely weigh myself) because I'm snacking less and potentially speeding up my metabolism because I'm getting rid of toxins in my body.
If you haven't started this great habit - give it a try - it is a good beauty secret! :)
**I am not sure that these are medically proven health benefits, they are benefits that I have personally experienced. I would encourage you do additional research.on the health benefits of drinking water if you are interested.
I need to try this. I've gone to the doctors on several occasions and one of their common remedies to prevent ailments (like migraines) is to drink more water. And it's a good tip to use a measurable container. At work, I'll just periodically fill up a glass so I never know exactly how much I drink. And two 32oz. bottles! I'm looking to drink a good bit more than that :P
ReplyDeleteThanks for the reminder! I try to drink a lot of water but also love my coffee so don't drink as much as I should. Going to fill up my water bottle right now.

You should add lemon wedges. Early on in my pregnancy I craved lemons so I started putting a lemon wedge in my water every time I would re-fill and now I'm addicted. Can't drink water without my lemon wedge!
ReplyDeleteThis post could not have come at a better time! After changing my diet and skin routine, I have found that my energy level and acne have not improved in the slightest. Today I decided I need to make the change and start drinking water. I'm embarrassed to admit that I drink 2-3 cups of coffee a day and milk with dinner. NO WATER. Ever. I'm on the 3rd glass of the day and cannot wait to see these results :o)
ReplyDeleteYES!! Oh my goodness, cutting out soda and other sugary drinks and juices will do WONDERS for your body!! Lovely blog!! I'm your newest follower, looking forward to more posts from you! <3

I swear by water! Love that you called it your beauty secret!
ReplyDeleteThis is all so true. I look and feel so much better when I'm drinking lots of water, and my skin is always so much clearer.
ReplyDeletewaaaah. I have several friends who promote it works wraps.
ReplyDeleteI have been so tempted... Then I think of all the iced tea I can buy with $25 bucks. But I'm so glad to hear it worked for you.
Water has been a big health focus of mine too. I have never felt better (or pee'd more.)
Found your blog through Monday Mingling. I used to drink lots of water when I was younger, I always had a water bottle in my purse. As I got older it was slowly replaced by coffee and now tea.
ReplyDeleteThis post motivates me to drink more water. I have been gaining weight and wonder if this is part of the problem.
It's great to go back to basics, no? Truly, water does great things to our body and I am glad that you shared your personal account with us on that matter. A healthier skin and body is a win-win situation! I, too, am campaigning the 'drink more water habit', so I'm happy to have found yet another who has the same endeavor.
