Aquamarine Dream

One of my favorite colors is Aquamarine (blue with a hint of green) and since it seems to be one of the latest color trends, I thought I would pass along some tips for decorating with this blue hue!

1} Be Bold
Aquamarine is a bold color so before you commit, test it out by painting a small section of your wall or taping a paint chip to the wall to preview it in different light.  Get a feel for it first!

If you're not ready to make a commitment to paint (or go through the hassle of painting) pick out a few pieces of furniture in an Aquamarine hue.  Try out chairs, a book case, or ottoman.  I painted a dresser in an Aquamarine shade.  To see my aquamarine dresser, click here.

2} Create Balance
One of the keys to decorating witha bold color is to create balance because bold colors can easily become overpowering.  Try to avoid accessorizing with aquamarine on every surface.  A small dose of aquamarine can make a BIG impression.  Try accessorizing with pillows, vases, lamps, curtains, or throws.

3} Pair It With Another Color
Aquamarine can be an overwhelming color, especially if you paint a whole room.  To break it up, try pairing the color with greys, creams, or whites.

If you are looking for some additional color try browns, yellows, oranges, or a shade of purple.

Spring & Summer Jewelry Trends

One of my loves, besides home design, is style and fashion trends!  With spring right around the corner, I am ready to get my summer wardrobe out, or at least spice up my winter wardrobe.  One of the easiest ways to freshen up your wardrobe is with jewelry.  Here are a few jewelry trends to try as we roll in to spring and summer 2012.

Since I'm a Lia Sophia jewelry adviser, I thought I would show off these trends with Lia Sophia Jewelry! :)

1} Statement Rings: Big rings get all of the attention!  This is an easy wardrobe addition, even if you just going to the grocery store.

2} Color: Jewelry is going beyond gold and silver - color is all the rage!  This is a great trend, especially if you typically rock a pretty neutral color pallet like I do!

Lia Sophia Gloss Rings

Lia Sophia Laguna Necklace

Lia Sophia Verde Bracelet

Lia Sophia Capri Earrings

3} Stacked Bracelets: Can't decide which bracelet to wear?  Put all of your favorite bracelets on!  No need for them to match - just have fun!

4} Pendant Necklaces:  Pendant necklaces are another easy style that goes with anything!  To mix up the pendant necklace style and give it a new look, add a second long necklace or even a short one.

Before & After: Guest Bedroom

Just a couple of weeks ago I re-decorated our guest bedroom for the second time (re-decorating is like an addiction)  I didn't like the original paint color I used at all.  Here is what the room looked like in July, before I first re-painted it and how it looks today!

Before

Yikes!  Not sure who the decorator was but maroon and mint green don't play well together...

After

Believe it or not, this is the same bedroom!  It looks 10x bigger with a lighter color, well-placed furniture and accessories!

Remember the dresser I painted from this post? (Tutorial included)

Here is a list of updates we made:
Paint
Added White trim
Carpet
Blinds
Light fixture
Bedding
Re-painted dresser
Accessories

Any re-decorating projects coming up in your house?! :)

Valspar Paint Project + Giveaway

I have been looking forward to this blog post all week!  Recently, Valspar paint contacted me and asked me to do a product review on their new spray paint formula and can design - of course I agreed because I have always had good luck with Valspar paint.

I also had a few spray paint projects in mind like art work for my laundry room...

Laundry Room Art Using Valspar Spray Paint

My laundry room was pretty bare and since we were adding new storage cupboards I figured this would be a great time to do a little extra decorating.  Here is what I came up with!

[Supplies]
Valspar spray paint (Lowe's)
11 x 14 Canvases (Hobby Lobby)
Letter stencils
Spray Adhesive

[Step 1] Make your stencils
I used my Cricut and the Don Juan and Lyrical Letters cartridges to create my stencils.  If you don't have a Cricut you can make stencils using fonts in Microsoft Word and printing your text on heavy cardstock, then cut out the letters with an exact-o knife.

[Step 2] Position Your Words
Take time to position your words on the canvases to decide where you want them.  Once you have that figured out, use spray adhesive to hold them in place on the canvas.  All you need to do is lightly spray the adhesive on the back of each letter and let it dry for about 30 seconds then re-position them on your canvas.

[Step 3] Spray Away!
This is the fun part!  I used Valspar spray paint in Tropical Oasis.  I did two coats of spray paint.  The first coat was a very light coat of paint that I let dry for about 5 minutes.  Then I came back and finished up with one more coat.  The coverage was so even and consistant that's all the paint it took!

First Coat

Second Coat

Ta Da!  Here is the final product!

I have to say, the Valspar paint I used was awesome!  The coverage was very even and the continuous spray was definitely a plus.  Not to mention, clean-up was a "piece of cake" too!  All I needed to do was twist and lock the cap and clean-up was done - no drips to clean up or anything.

I had so much fun painting those canvases that I also painted a grapvine wreath using Valspar spray paint in Exotic Sea.  The coverage was still consistant and got into all of the cracks and crevaces that a wreath has without any trouble!

{Guest Post} Valentines Day Homemade Marshmallows!

Meet Alise...

Alise currently works for Crave Brothers Farmstead Cheese in Waterloo, Wisconsin as their marketing coordinator and cheese affineur (aka, cheese babysitter). She grew up on a dairy farm in central Minnesota and has since developed an obsession for the specialty cheese industry. Alise spent two years working for an aged cheddar cheese company in southern Vermont, one year as a food broker and the past two years blogging about her experiences (as well as her full-time job).

Alise's bottom two refrigerator drawers are full of cheese.

As a food lover, Alise loves chocolate, medium-rare steaks smothered in bleu cheese, red wine, craft brews and a tall glass of cold milk.

She says, "I don't believe in diets. I exercise so that I can eat."   And, she will never be a Packers fan.

Homemade Raspberry Marshmallows and Mexican Hot Chocolate

It's the middle of winter and if you're like me, you stare out the window during work dreaming about cuddling up on the couch with the biggest blanket you can find and a cup of hot cocoa. Actually, I thankfully don't sit at my desk all that often – but when I do, you know what I'm doing.

I've joined the craze of spending pointless hours on Pinterest. The good thing about it – is that I find awesome recipes without reading a single thing. I'm a 'learn by doing' or 'seeing' kind of person, so Pinterest (a website full of photos) has been great for my recipe-finding binge. I came across homemade marshmallows one day and decided to check it out. I always see them in specialty shops, costing about $5.00 for 4 marshmallows. I wanted to know what the hype was all about. I hope you're not a sucker for spending that much on 4 marshmallows because guess what, they're really easy to make! Valentine's Day is coming up folks – don't delay!

The marshmallow recipe takes only 15 minutes to make, but needs to set for at least 4 hours. Feel free to make these a day or more in advance so that you have them on hand when you want them. The Mexican Hot Chocolate only takes a few minutes to heat up, so you and your honey will be cuddling in no time.

Homemade Raspberry Marshmallows

Adapted from Slashfood.com

0.75oz unflavored gelatin (3 envelopes of Knox gelatin)
½ cup cold water
2 cups granulated sugar
2/3 cup light corn syrup
¼ cup water
¼ teaspoon salt
½ tablespoon raspberry extract
½ tablespoon vanilla extract
6-8 drops neon pink food coloring, depending on desired color

Confectioners sugar
Cornstarch

Line a rimmed cookie sheet with plastic wrap and lightly oil it. Set aside.

In the bowl of an electric mixer, sprinkle gelatin over ½ cup cold water. Soak for about 10 minutes (or while you're preparing the next step).

Meanwhile, combine sugar, corn syrup and ¼ cup water in a small saucepan. Bring the mixture to a rapid boil and boil hard for 1 minute.

Pour the boiling syrup into soaked gelatin and turn on the mixer, using the whisk attachment, to high speed. Add the salt and beat for 12 minutes. After 12 minutes, add in the raspberry and vanilla extracts and food coloring. Beat to incorporate.

Scrape marshmallow into the prepared pan and spread evenly. Take another piece of lightly oild plastic wrap and press lightly on the top of the marshmallow creating a seal. Let mixture sit for a few hours, or overnight, until cold and firmly set.

In a shallow dish, combine equal parts cornstarch and confectioners' sugar. Remove marshmallow from pan and cut into equal pieces with scissors or cookie cutters.

Dredge each piece of marshmallow in confectioners' sugar mixture.

Store in an airtight container for up to 20 days.  Makes about 40 large marshmallows, depending on the size you choose to cut them.

Mexican Hot Chocolate
Adapted from Running to the Kitchen

2 cups whole milk
1 cup water
1 ounce dark chocolate chips
1 ounce dark chocolate cocoa
¼ teaspoon cinnamon
¼ teaspoon vanilla extract
1 Tablespoon sugar
1/8 teaspoon chili powder
pinch of salt

Combine all ingredients in a small sauce pan over medium high heat.

Stir to combine and heat until just before boiling.

Top with your homemade marshmallows!

Thank you Beth, for inviting me to be a guest on your blog today. It's been a pleasure!

Easy Valentine's Day Card Ideas

Some say that Valentine's Day is a "Hallmark Holiday."  If that's the case, why not make your own Valentine's Day cards for the ones you love?! :)  Here are a few easy Valentine's Day card ideas to tell your sweetheart just home much you love them!

1} A Best Friend

8 1/2" x 11'

Fold a piece of 8 1/2 x 11 white cardstock in half and trim it to a width of 4" so it fits in a standard envenlope.  I layered scrapbook paper to create the Valentine's day theme and finished it with a friendship message from a Stampin' Up rubber stamp set.

This card fits in a standard envelope.

2} Love You

4" x 6"

I love how simple this message is.  I used letter stamps to create this card but if you don't have rubber stamps you can easily use stickers or cut out letters from magazines!

3} For You

5" x 5"
Inside message: "I was thinking you could keep it!"

This is my favorite card of the three!  It's so sweet and perfect for a new love or a long-time love.

If you can use a pair of scissors, you can easily make this card.  Take yourself back to elementary art class and use the skills you learned to cut out a paper heart and find letters from magazines.  The message for the inside of the card can be printed from the computer or hand written.  Glue the card together with a glue stick and you have the perfect Valentine's Day message.

I hope these ideas help you create your own "Hallmark Holiday" and show the ones you love how much they mean to you!

Look Trendy in Work Clothes

Since Monday I have been at our company's (Pioneer Hi-Bred) Agronomy Conference.  This means I have been stuck wearing company logo-d clothing.  For some reason I have never liked or felt comfortable in clothing that displays a company logo.  Maybe it's because It usually means wearing a polo shirt or button down oxford that never fits quite right because it was ordered for a guy (since the majority of our sales force is male).  This inspired me to write a quick blog post with ideas to make work clothes look trendy.

I will be the first to admit that I am 100% girl and love fashion.  It is rare to see me wear a t-shirt and jeans when I am out in public.  I prefer nice clothes; cute dresses, awesome shoes, expensive jeans and accessories!

This by no means is an awesome picture and I don't claim to be photogenic. :)

Today's conference attire is a blue long-sleeved t-shirt. The good news is that I could live in long-sleeved t-shirts so today is a no-stress day for me! :)

Here are a couple of ideas to look trendy in your "work" clothes...

1. Think beyond kahki pants
Skirts, wide-leg trousers or cropped pants are great alternatives to the standard khaki pant.

2. Cute Shoes
Unless you are working at a trade show for 8 hours straight, wear cute shoes.
Flats, peep-toe shoes, wedges or boots can complete an outfit.
(You can't see them very well in the picture, but I am sporting a cute pair of brown boots)

3. Jewelry
Chuncky necklaces, bracelets and earrings allow you to insert your style into any wardrobe
If you are looking for awesome jewelry check out the Lia Sophia website

4. Scarves or Belts
Add your favorite scarf to incorporate color or a wear colored belt

Most importantly OWN IT! Whatever you wear, own your style.  People are attracted to confidence and who knows...you may set the next fashion trend!
