Pinterest Purchase - 'Naked 2'

Pinterest got me!  I found this pin on Pinterest via one of my friends, which lead me on a shopping excursion to Sephora to purchase this Urban Decay - Naked 2 eyeshadow palette.

Seriously - who wouldn't want to look like Carrie Underwood?!

Even though this pin boasts the original Urban Decay Naked palette, I opted for the Naked 2 palette.  I loved the colors!

The Naked 2 palette comes with 12 eyeshadows that are rich in color, go on easily and blend well.  I must say, I'm impressed!  Yeah, it was $50 but it came with a lip gloss and eyeshadow brush!  If you take your favorite eyeshadow x 12, the price is about the same or less!  (I usually wear Mary Kay eyeshadow, which is $6.50/eyeshadow x 12 = $78, that's how I justified my purchase)

Sunday Spruce-Up

We had another really awesome weekend here in Iowa so most of it was spent outside either reading on the porch, taking the dog for a walk or working on a few outdoor projects.  Yesterday, I took the liberty to spruce up this start that hangs on the front of our house.

This star has seen it's better days!  It has made it through two re-locations and is at it's third home.  I felt it deserved a little facelift! :)

Re-painting is definitely the fun part in any project, but first you might want to remove the old paint that is flaking off.  The best way to do this is using a wire brush or if you don't have a wire brush, a grill brush works great too! 

I needed to make sure my new paint would stick and go on evenly so I used Valspar spray paint primer in white.  I let that dry for about 30 minutes.

I changed the color of my start completely!   Instead of going back to red, I used Valspar spray paint in Tropical Oasis.  This took two coats of spray paint.

Between coats of spray paint, I got a little distracted.  "Bam," our dog, decided to go tease our heifers.  See him on his back?  He had something that they were interested in...

Ok, back to the project!

Here is the new and improved star!

I think my next Sunday Spruce-Up might have to be washing the house!

I Found It!

Our bathroom remodel project is progressing quickly meaning that we may be able to paint this week!  Our tile, accent tile and granite are picked out, but I've been looking for a color pallet.  I knew exactly what I wanted, I just needed to see it first! (have you ever had that happen - the, "I'll know it when I see it" thought?)  Well, I FOUND IT!

Now, I just need to decide between the light blue (color at the very bottom) or one of the off-white (I refuse to say beige) at the top accented with light blue and and deep grey (middle color) towels.  I am thinking of adding a splash of dark pink just to spice things up! Any thoughts?

Bathroom Remodel Inspiration

It's fun seeing our bathroom come together, it's like a suprise every night when I come home!  The tub/shower is now framed up and installed and the tile will start to go in next week. 

Since I mentioned in my Extreme Makeover: Bathroom Edition! post that we were able to start completely over, here is a look at some of my bathroom remodel inspiration!

Cabinets & Cupboards

I love the glass inserts in the cabinet/closet doors.  The cabinets in our bathroom will have frosted glass inserts.  This will help to keep our space light and create the illusion of space.

Vanity "Extra"

I love jewelry and since I am a Lia Sophia advisor, I have plenty of it.  This is going to be built into our custom made vanity. 

Shower Built-In

 This picture is basically what our tub and shower will look like.  Tiled shower surround with glass doors.  We also will have a built-in ledge in the shower just like the one in this picture.

Tile

 Here is the tile that we chose!  The off-white tile will be on the floor and shower surround.  The glass tile will go in the built-in ledge and behind the sink.

Extreme Makeover: Bathroom Edition!

In case you haven't been following Design Your Dwelling on Facebook, you probably haven't heard that our bathroom is getting a makeover!  Yep, that's right a complete face-lift!  ( I secretly wish that the people from HGTV's "Bath Crashers" would show up)

Here is what our bathroom looked like pre-makeover!

We were in the process of packing up the bathroom, if you can't tell! :)

The bathroom was very 70's with the mint green, vanity and mirrors.  We are ready to replace the wooden floors with tile floors.

Here is what our bathroom (construction zone) looks like now.  

When we removed the toilet, the date stamped inside the tank was from the 1950's! Do you think it's about time for a new one?!

Since our bathroom was gutted, we had the opportunity to start completely start over and create a new layout.  Our bathroom is actually pretty large for bathroom standards, 9' x 11' 1/2". Here is the rough sketch that Adam drew up for us!

Here is what's next:

New floor plan

Replace sheet rock & ceiling

New plumbing and electrical work

All new lighting & bathroom fan

Custom built vanity, closet and cupboards

Replace wood floor with tile

Tile the shower

Glass shower doors

New mirrors

New bathtub, toilet and hardware

Whew - what a list!  Basically everything is going to be replaced and updated.

Before & After: Master Bedroom

Adam said the house is all mine (outside the house is his) and I have had fun turning this bachelor pad into a home!  Here is another sneak peak at our house with the before and after of our master bedroom.

I took these "before" pictures this summer when we were getting ready to re-paint.

The master bedroom is actually like two rooms combined to make the master bedroom.  The photo above is the area where our closet and dresser is. 

Nice bedding, huh?! :)  Oh - and check out the maroon roller shades! Pretty sweet!

After

 We turned the space where the closet is into a dressing area/reading corner.  The chair actually serves as a "catch-all" spot for clothes rather than a reading corner.

We actually made quite a few updates to our master bedroom (remember our house is an old farmhouse), which included...

Trim

Closet doors

Furniture

Bedding

Window treatments

Light fixture/ceiling fan

Believe it or not, the decor is mostly from Target with a few pieces from Bed, Bath & Beyond and the Hayworth mirror above the bed is from Pier 1.

I love how it turned out - very clean and contemporary and not overly feminine!

How to Mix & Match Patterns

Ever wonder what makes a room look so great?!  Of course there are a few things like furniture layout and color scheme but creating some visual interest by mixing prints and patterns is what gives the room a finished look!

So, as a continuation of my post from Wednesday, Know Your Decor Patterns, I thought it would be beneficial to take you one step further and offer some tips for how to mix and match patterns. Mixing and Matching patterns can bring a lot of excitement into a room, but trying to make it work can be a little intimidating and somewhat overwhelming. Here are three tips to make this work for you and a look at some of my favorite rooms that rock mixed patterns!

1} Set small patterns against large patterns

2} Use a large, solid-colored object (sofa, wall, floor, dresser) to ground your patterns

3} Limit your color pallet to 3-4 main colors
