Wedding Wednesday - Choosing a Color Scheme

Wedding colors! Who doesn't have a vision in their mind for what they want their wedding colors to be?!  I remember seeing a wedding party where the bridesmaids were wearing coral dresses and the guys were wearing khaki suits and fell in love with the look! Based on that inspiration pinks, corals are some of my favorites and neutrals and grays also make the top of the list.  Yep - that's a lot of colors but I think there is a way that they can all be used.

The colors a bride chooses are primarily used as bridesmaid dresses and complimented with flowers and table decorations so take  into consideration how and where you will use your colors when making a decision - it's kind of like decorating a room...

You have probably seen these color schemes (and dress combinations) all over the internet so they look "over-done."  At least that is what I thought until my sister asked me, "Have you ever been to a wedding with that color scheme?"  The answer was "no." Lesson learned!  Before you make a decision, think about the weddings you've been to recently to recall if anyone has done anything similar to what your considering. Even if they have done something similar, who cares!  It's your big day! :)

One more thing, if picking out a color scheme is somewhat difficult for you I recommend two things to try:

1. Go to Style Me Pretty and look up bridesmaids.  They give you color schemes!  Once I make a decision my bridesmaids will get a copy of the color scheme from this website to choose their dresses.

2. Try out the Sherwin Williams "Chip-It" tool.  It's easy to use and pulls up a color scheme from a photo.  I use it often for my design boards.

I am well aware that it is fall and I should be thinking about fall colors but I am loving blush and sea foam green!  I like these colors for everything from decor to fashion and accessories. Here are some of my picks from Pinterest.

The colors trimmed or accessorized in gold are especially beautiful!  I am planning a wedding for approximately a year from now and may have to incorporate these colors in some way! :)

I Found It!

Our bathroom remodel project is progressing quickly meaning that we may be able to paint this week!  Our tile, accent tile and granite are picked out, but I've been looking for a color pallet.  I knew exactly what I wanted, I just needed to see it first! (have you ever had that happen - the, "I'll know it when I see it" thought?)  Well, I FOUND IT!

Now, I just need to decide between the light blue (color at the very bottom) or one of the off-white (I refuse to say beige) at the top accented with light blue and and deep grey (middle color) towels.  I am thinking of adding a splash of dark pink just to spice things up! Any thoughts?

Color Inspiration

I have this "bug" to paint an old dresser that was in the house before I moved into the house in August.  It's the perfect height and has some character too.  Plus - it would look great in our guest bedroom with the makeover I have in store. (You can check out my guest room re-do board on Pinterest)

Color is one of the quickest and most inexpensive wasy to update your home or a piece of furniture but deciding on paint colors can also be an overwhelming task.  Here are the three principals I follow to select color.

1. Seek Inspiration!
Color inspiration can come from anywhere.  Maybe there is a hue (color) in the fabric of a decorative pillow or wall-hanging.  Inspiration may come from a flower garden or favorite shirt.  Just take time to notice the colors around you.  I found my color inspiration from this vase that was sitting on my co-workers desk.  It is the exact shade of turquoise I was looking for!

2. Select Your Colors!

Using your color inspiration, it's time to pick your colors.  It may be helpful to bring a sample of your inspiration to the paint store to find a color that closely matches.  I brought this vase into Lowe's yesterday and found a color that matched what I was looking for.  I chose the middle color called "Ocean Voyage."

3. Test Your Color!  (This is what you should do, I just selected a color...)
Once you have narrowed your choices to a select few colors, test them out to get a feel for how they might look in the room you want to paint.  You can test them out by taping the samples to your wall or asking the paint store if you can get a small sample container to actually paint a portion of the wall.  Look at the color during different times of the day and in different light and notice how it affects your mood - colors envoke emotion.

And now, a moment of honesty.  I am nervous to re-paint this dresser!  I hope it turns out!  Watch for a follow-up post about re-painting furniture.  I'll give you the good, the bad and (hopefully not) the ugly.

Design Trend: Ombre

Has anyone else noticed this design trend called Ombre?  Or, maybe you've seen this design trend but didn't know what the technical term was. 

Here is the definition via Webster Dictionary online: 

Ombre: (adjective) "having colors or tones that shade into each other —used especially of fabrics in which the color is graduated from light to dark."

I think Ombre is an awesome design trend and a creative way to add color to your decor, clothing and food!  Check out these Ombre examples I found on Pinterest.

Living Room Plan

I am in desparate need of a game-plan to jazz up our living room.  I find our main living and gathering space to be a little boring and in need of some color and visual interest. 

Fortunately we have a solid foundation to start with including updated furniture, brand new windows, a solid wood floor and a wall color that will work with any color scheme!  Below are my initial thoughts for color and my "to do" list.

1. Select window treatments (shades and curtains)

2. Find new or re-cover throw pillows

3. Wall hangings

4. Accessorize

5. Replace the rug?

I would define my style as contemporary and simple but I would really like to incorporate pattern and texture to create visual interest in this room.  I think I can accomplish that by re-covering throw pillows and finding the right curtains.  Chances are, I will probably end up doing a lot of sewing so I get the fabric and exact look that I want. (Believe it or not I can sew... but only straight lines!)
